Bringing Baby Home is a class for expectant parents or parents with infants up to about 6 months old based on the research of Dr. John Gottman. It gives couples information about what to expect after having a baby, teaches couples relationship strengthening skills and conflict regulation skills in order to help them co-parent as a team, and educates couples about infant development in order to help them become sensitive, responsive parents.
A randomized controlled study showed that couples who had taken the workshop showed more relationship stability, had lower maternal rates of post-partum depression; fathers were more involved in parenting and had higher quality interactions with their babies compared to the control group. In addition, the infants, who generally weren’t even born when the parents took the workshop, demonstrated positive effects as well – fewer language delays and better emotional regulation overall. |
Transition to Parenthood 2-hour Workshops
Because Bringing Baby Home is a very time intensive program, requiring couples to complete 12 hours of education, I am currently offering the Before Baby/After Baby workshops, which are based on Bringing Baby Home. Each workshop lasts for 2 hours; they can be taken in sequence but each one is designed to stand on its own as well. |
Before Baby
Many couples know that while the transition to parenthood is a time of great possibility and hope, it can also be a stressful and tiring time. The Transition to Parenthood workshop is designed to teach expectant couples what to expect after having a baby and to provide them with some specific tools to negotiate the transition and to support each other through it.
After Baby
Now that you have a baby, you’re probably exhausted and cranky. You and your partner probably don’t see eye to eye on every aspect of being a parent, which can be stressful and make it tough to co-parent effectively. Although I can’t make you less tired, this workshop can help you find ways to manage your stress and to communicate effectively with your partner about all of these changes. The Managing Stress and Conflict Resolution workshop is designed for couples with infants less than 6 months old (a limited number of babies may attend with their parents - contact Dr. Menzer about availability).
